BURNING ISSUES

Conference on gender (in)equality

„The thing women have yet to learn is nobody gives you power. You just take it.“

Roseanna Barr

On the initiative of Nicola Bramkamp (SAVE THE WORLD) and Lisa Jopt (Ensemble Netzwerk), female theatre makers from German-speaking countries came together from 17 - 19 May 2019 to campaign for a change in the theatre landscape. The second conference of the power women of Burning Issues was not only about interpreting and pillorying grievances in the areas of gender justice, sexism and the compatibility of work and family, but also about initiating change through positive and solution-oriented work. Topics included the gender pay gap and personnel policy in relation to directorships, as well as the underrepresentation of women's roles in theatre literature and the lack of support for actors and actresses with children. Also discussed were strategies to make diversity more visible on stage. Another topic on the agenda was structural sexism in the theatre, because - according to the tenor among the participants - very few (theatre men) seem to be aware of its existence to this day.

In 2020 the theatre business is to be stirred up again - with a third edition of Burning Issues, this time as a guest at Kampnagel in Hamburg.
